The Desfiladero de los Gaitanes is a breathtaking natural area located in the heart of Málaga Province, between the towns of Álora, Antequera, and Ardales. It is one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Málaga mountains. Between its towering cliffs flows the Guadalhorce River, after passing through the reservoirs of El Chorro, Guadalhorce, Guadalteba, and Gaitanejo.
The Caminito del Rey is spectacular from start to finish, stretching from the Conde de Guadalhorce Reservoir to the El Chorro Dam. Set in a unique natural environment, the trail winds through dramatic gorges, canyons, and a wide valley, following a combination of paths and elevated wooden walkways.
The route is linear rather than circular, descending in one direction only, from north to south. It begins in Ardales and ends in Álora. The trail is almost 8 km long and takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete.
In 2014, the Caminito del Rey underwent a complete restoration. A new walkway with wooden panels was built alongside the original path. The renovation was completed in early 2015, and the trail reopened at the end of March, attracting huge public interest.
